Located between two oceans, Costa Rica is dominated by a tropical climate and a complex topography that makes it a country of varied weather conditions. The weather in Costa Rica consists mainly of two seasons, the rainy or “winter” season begins in May and ends in early December and the dry or “summer” season beginning in mid December and ending late April, but these patterns are not as predictable as they used to be.

Though the climate is pleasant all year round varying by only 10 degrees between seasons, there are some significant temperature differences as a result of differences in altitude. The coastal or lowland regions of Costa Rica experience warmer temperatures, while the more mountainous highland regions produce milder or cooler temperatures. The climate can best be summed up as an air of “eternal spring”, with average annual temperature ranging from 89F degrees in the coastal regions to 62F degrees in the interior region.

In conclusion the weather depends mainly on two factors. The first is the time of year you go and the second where you are in Costa Rica. A good rule of thumb is the coast usually gets less rain and is subject to the warmest temperatures. Inland regions (Central Valley) get a bit more rain and slightly cooler temperatures than the coast while the mountainous areas benefit from the coolest temperatures with precipitation depending on the season.

The weather is a highly variable force and even best laid plans, with the utmost forethought can still take a detour when nature takes its course. But embracing those unplanned detours and experiencing the country’s rich and unpredictable natural environment can be one of the best parts of a Costa Rican experience.
