The CR Operations office oversees all of IAU’s guides, drivers and activities within the country, manages all of the logistics of your trip, and works intimately with the U.S. Operations and Sales office to design itineraries that are logistically sound and meet the company’s high level of quality standards. From your arrival to your departing flight, the CR Operations team ensures that our guests enjoy safe trips and prove reliable information and friendly assistance during your journey.

Alex Fernandez – Director - CR Operations
Alex was born in the States to Costa Rican parents and grew up around Los Angeles, California. Since his move to Costa Rica in 1991, he has led hundreds of groups from all over the world throughout the country. His first love is whitewater, and his 15 years of whitewater experience includes leading class IV and V trips on the Burnt Ranch Gorge section of the Trinity River as well as the Wild Plum section of the Yuba River. He of course has also run nearly every river in Costa Rica with countless trips down the famed Pacuare and Reventazon under his belt.

Alex's bilingual language skills and bicultural awareness are invaluable to our guests experience. He ensures that under his direction, every trip runs like clockwork, is logistically sound and that our guides, drivers, and itineraries meet the company’s high level of quality and proffessional standards that he helps to define.

Carol Vargas - Logistical Development and River Operations Manager
90% of IAU's itineraries include a whitewater trip and so Carol is often pretty busy ensuring that each river trip runs smoothly, checking on water levels and ensuring that every safety precaution is taken. But as a member of Costa Rica's national whitewater rafting team, this job comes second nature to her and gives her an excuse to do what she loves. In addition to her extensive experience rafting in Costa Rica, Carol has also run rivers in the US, Chile and Italy.
