Day
1
Fly out to Puerto Jimenez in the Southern end of the Osa Peninsula with
your IAU guide. Once in Puerto Jimenez, you'll be driven to the trail
head in the small town of La Palma where your guide will go over what
to expect over the next few days. As soon as everyone's backpacks are
on, you'll start down the 4 to 5 hour trail towards your destination
for tonight - Los Patos ranger station. Most of the trail today follows
the course of a river that you'll end up crossing nearly 20 times! Rubber
boots are your new best friends. . . Upon arrival at Los Patos, you'll
set up camp and enjoy a hearty meal as prepared by the staff at Los
Patos.
Day
2
After breakfast you'll begin what will be a full day (7-8 hour) of exploring
as you quietly make your way towards the most developed and most remote
ranger station/ research center, La Sirena. Along the way you'll be
able to spot tapirs, wild pigs, troops of curious monkeys, anteaters
and flocks of scarlet macaws among other interesting animals. La Sirena
ranger station is largely a center for field studies where famous scientists
and students alike gather to do research on the flora and fauna of the
jungle. Sometimes it is possible to meet photographers or researchers
willing to form a group to organize a night tour into the jungle or
out to the nearby beach (30 minute hike from the station) to hopefully
spot the rare jaguars that still reside within the park.
Day
3
Take a pre-arranged boat north along the long beach towards the San
Pedrillo Ranger Station. Arrive and check in with officials. Enjoy a
relaxing day on the beach, with trails that lead off into the jungle
as well to nearby waterfalls. The sunset viewing is magnificent from
a jungle vantage point.
Day
4
Today follows a trail southward along the coast towards Drake Bay for
about 4 to 5 hours. Once you arrive at the secluded rustic refuge that
is Las Caletas Lodge, you'll settle in and concentrate on soaking your
hikers legs in the rejuvinating waters of the Pacific. Enjoy a fun afternoon
on the beach and an hearty farewell dinner prepared by our lodge hosts.
Day
5
After an early breakfast and farewell, take a boat up the Sierpe River.
Fly from Palmar Sur back to San Jose. |
