rivers
There are hundreds
of rivers strewn across the Costa Rican landscape. The three below,
however, stand out as our favorites for a lazy float, learning to kayak
and genuine adventure – respectively.
Penas
Blancas
The Penas Blancas is a class I-II river that runs from the protected
region of Monteverde to the plains of Sarapiqui. The river has been
called the “whitewater gem of Costa Rica’s Atlantic Slope”
because of its smooth rapids and beautiful scenery. The river is surrounded
by forested canyons which rise as tall as 700 feet and contain volcanic
hot springs and picturesque waterfalls, as well as an abundance of riverside
flora and fauna.
Pejibaye
River
The Pejibaye is a calm, class II - III river located near Turrialba.
It starts high in the mountains and winds down through dense jungle
and farmland with lush canopy above. Along the river’s edge are
views of sugarcane, coffee and banana plantations. This river is a perfect
spot for families with young children or for those who are interested
in learning how to whitewater kayak.
Pacuare
River
Named the 5th most scenic whitewater river in the world, the Pacuare
is a must if you come to Costa Rica. The river borders the Talmanca
Mountain Range and is surrounded by lowland tropical rainforest and
lush vegetative gorges that are home to jaguars, monkeys, sloths, and
the nearby Indigenous Cabecar Indians. On the river you’ll plunge
through rapids, paddle past powerful waterfalls, all while marveling
at the spectacular biodiversity and scenery.
